Inmarsat’s Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch on MSUA Game Changers Live
Inmarsat Government’s Senior Vice President of Government Strategy and Policy, Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, recently participated in the Mobile Satellite Users Association’s (MSUA) Game Changers Live video series. During this livestreamed interview, Cowen-Hirsch and MSUA’s President, Lisa Dreher, discuss a variety of satellite communications-related topics including industry trends and technological advancements, as well as the impact of the commercialization of space on the satellite industry.
Cowen-Hirsch highlights how the commercialization of space and associated investments are leading to exciting innovations, including rapid manufacturing capabilities and shrinking terminal sizes, and how Inmarsat is taking advantage of this to deliver additional value to its customers.
Specifically, she talks about how Inmarsat has invested ahead of need to meet the insatiable demand for coverage and throughput. “That’s what Inmarsat has done consistently in their history and, of course, as we look forward over the next 12 to 24 months, we will be adding to our L-band fleet, we will be adding to our Global Xpress capabilities, and we will be going into a different orbit…in addition to the GEO where our satellites are operating today, we will be adding an arctic capability (via HEO satellites)… to be able to be the first commercial provider providing really good, solid broadband all around the world, plus over the poles,” Cowen-Hirsch said.
Cowen-Hirsch also discusses what the commercialization of space means from a user perspective, specifically focusing on the importance of reliability, security, global portability and scalability. The conversation also touches upon new technologies for users, including terminals enhancements that support low size, weight and power, as well as higher throughput and modem adaptability to widen the number of networks users can connect to.
